Express Entry: A Complete Guide to Canada's Federal Skilled Worker Programs

Canada’s Express Entry system manages applications for three federal economic immigration programs. If you want to immigrate to Canada as a skilled worker, Express Entry is likely your most direct pathway. This guide explains how the system works and how to position your profile for success.

The Three Programs in Express Entry

Express Entry manages three programs:

1. Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) For foreign nationals with skilled work experience outside Canada. You must score at least 67 points on a selection factors grid covering education, work experience, age, language ability, and arranged employment.

2. Canadian Experience Class (CEC) For individuals with at least one year of skilled work experience in Canada within the past three years. Language requirements vary by occupation type.

3. Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) For individuals with experience in specific skilled trades, including electricians, plumbers, welders, and other technical occupations.

How the Comprehensive Ranking System Works

Candidates who meet the eligibility criteria for at least one program create an Express Entry profile and enter the pool. The CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System) assigns points in four core areas:

  • Core/human capital factors — age, education, official language proficiency (English and French), and Canadian work experience
  • Spouse or common-law partner factors — if applicable
  • Skill transferability factors — combinations of education, work experience, and language ability
  • Additional factors — a provincial nomination (worth 600 points) or a valid arranged employment offer

The Draw Process

IRCC runs regular Express Entry draws and invites the highest-ranked candidates in the pool to apply for permanent residence. Invitation cut-off scores vary significantly between draws and have ranged from the high 400s to over 500 points depending on draw type.

IRCC may also run category-based draws targeting specific occupations in high demand (healthcare, trades, STEM, etc.) or French-language speakers.

Maximizing Your CRS Score

Key strategies for increasing your CRS score include:

  • Improve your language scores — Higher IELTS or CELPIP scores can significantly increase your core language points. French language ability (TEF Canada or TCF Canada) can add substantial bonus points.
  • Complete your education — Having your foreign credentials assessed by a Designated Learning Institution recognized by WES or another designated organization can increase your education points.
  • Gain Canadian work experience — Working in Canada on a work permit builds toward Canadian Experience Class eligibility and adds points.
  • Pursue a provincial nomination — A provincial nomination award adds 600 CRS points, effectively guaranteeing an invitation to apply. Each province has its own provincial nominee program with different streams and requirements.

After Receiving an Invitation to Apply

You have 60 days to submit a complete permanent residence application after receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA). The application must include:

  • Identity documents (passport, birth certificate)
  • Language test results
  • Educational credential assessment
  • Employment records and reference letters
  • Police certificates from each country where you have lived
  • Medical examination results

Incomplete or inaccurate applications can be refused or delayed significantly.

Working With an Immigration Lawyer

An immigration lawyer can review your profile before you submit it, identify potential issues with your application, and help you compile a complete, accurate application within the 60-day window. If your application is refused, a lawyer can advise on your options including reapplying or seeking judicial review.
